Midgets Boys Golfers Take Second at Okawville

The Freeburg High School boys golf team is off to a blistering start to the season, capping off an action-packed opening two weeks with a thrilling runner-up finish at the Okawville Invitational. The Midgets turned in a stellar team score of 12 over par, 292, finishing just a single stroke behind champion Red Bud in a highly competitive field.
Austin Donovan led the charge at Okawville with an even-par 70 to take third place overall. Beau Davis carded a one-over-par round to finish fourth, while Nick Whitney posted a three-over performance to claim seventh, securing All-Tournament Team honors for all three players. Mason Middendorf rounded out the team scoring at eight-over-par.
The strong showing follows a sequence of high-caliber tournament outings for Freeburg. On August 27, the squad put together a historic nine-hole showing at the Goalby/Haas Tournament, firing a collective one-under-par 143. Freeburg missed out on first place by just one shot to O’Fallon, anchored by twin two-under-par 34s from Donovan and Davis, who tied for second on the All-Tournament Team. Middendorf added a 37 to take 10th place, while Whitney shot a 38.
Two days earlier at the St. Clair County Tournament on August 25, the Midgets posted a 27-over-par 311 to secure another second-place overall finish to O’Fallon. Donovan placed fourth individually with a 74, and Austin Klees took seventh with a 77, earning both players All-Tournament selections.
The mid-August stretch was highlighted by a tournament championship at the Steeleville Tournament on August 22, where Freeburg captured first place with a 17-over-par team total of 313. The Midgets completely dominated the top of the leaderboard, occupying four of the top five individual spots to sweep All-Tournament honors: Davis in second (77), Middendorf in third (78), Donovan in fourth (79), and Whitney in fifth (79). Freeburg’s recent tournament surge comes on the heels of a tight 160–162 dual match loss against Columbia on August 24, where Donovan and Davis both shot 38s, and a dominant opening triangular victory on August 17. In that initial match, the Midgets shot a 154 to comfortably defeat Okawville (166) and Marissa (193), led by low rounds from Davis (36) and Donovan (37).
