About as fun as a tumor
Number: 1.5/5
After her abusive husband is killed, Maddie (Annabelle Wallis) begins having visions of more killings. Somehow connected to the killer, Maddie comes to believe only she can stop the murders.
It’s a tale as old as time, James Wan makes a cool horror movie only for that film to spawn an endless line of inferior sequels. Well, we don’t have to worry about half of that future here. I have no idea if Hollywood will wretch out awful sequels to Malignant, but James Wan did not make a cool movie this time.
Wan is a master of walking the line between stylized camp and terror in a way that only Sam Rami can top. There’s just nothing to Malignant. It’s not particularly scary and not near dumb enough to be silly fun.
A major plot twist late in the game was telegraphed pretty heavily. It carries very little surprise factor, and not enough “wow” to make up for the utter silliness it brings and the awkward mechanics of how it works.
This is a movie with a bunch of meaningless stuff that happens in service of a twist that isn’t strong enough to justify it. Malignant is a forgettable misstep from an otherwise talented director and nothing more.
